A practical guide to help health sciences learning and development professionals grow, based on a recognized competency standard. Developed in partnership with CSTD.

Why was it created?
The Core Skills program was developed to address the current competency gaps across the health sciences community. Gaps include:

  • Inconsistent training curriculums and lack of standards
  • Most experience “on the job”, not standard
  • Pressure to perform with little time for training
  • 30% annual turnover in training positions
  • Trainer’s half life usually < 2 years
  • 80% of trainers have been in position < 4 years
  • 77% of trainers attend US conventions only

CCPE’s goal was to clearly articulate the requirements of the role of an effective training & development professional, as well as to promote general competency standards. 

The need for this program was further investigated and confirmed with 88 members of the pharmaceutical community. Details (PDF 91 Kb)

 

What does the program offer?

It is the first program directly targeted to the Canadian learning and development community in the health science field.  It describes the technical skills required for an effective professional. The competency framework describes 5 essential requirements:

  • Analyze performance and assess needs
  • Design effective instructional materials
  • Facilitate and teach
  • Evaluate training
  • Coaching and post-training follow-up

The program is also accompanied by 3 practical components:

  1. Self-assessment toolkit to evaluate current level of proficiency
  2. Learning guide for competency development
  3. Resourceful Learning Catalogue (nearly 600 references), listing:
    Books, articles, websites
    Audio, video and e-learning documents
    Courses, workshops and continuing education programs
This complementary program is designed as a self-development toolkit for Learning and Development Professionals.
